Solution

(a) Differences between crystalline and amorphous forms of carbon:

Crystalline form of carbon

Amorphous form of carbon

The atoms of the elements in this form have a specific arrangement.

In this form, the arrangement of atoms is irregular.

Examples: Diamond, graphite and fullerene

Examples: Coke and coal

(b) Differences between diamond and graphite:

Diamond

Graphite

It is the hardest mineral known.

It is one of the softest minerals.

In it, each carbon atom is bonded to four other carbon atoms to form tetrahedrons.

In it, each carbon atom is joined to three other carbon atoms by strong covalent bonds to form flat hexagonal rings.

The tetrahedrons combine to give it a 3-D structure.

It has a 2-D layer-like hexagonal structure.

It does not conduct electricity.

It is a good conductor of electricity.
