Differentiate between pure and impure substances.
Differences between pure and impure substances:
Pure substances | Impure substances |
Pure substances have definite composition and definite physical and chemical properties. | Impure substances are made up of two or more pure substances mixed together in any proportion. |
Pure substances are all homogeneous i.e. their composition is identical throughout the bulk. | They may be homogeneous or heterogeneous i.e. their composition is not fixed throughout the bulk. |
Pure substances have definite melting and boiling points. | They are all mixtures. It does not have definite melting and boiling points. |
Examples: Elements and compounds. | Examples: Air, seawater, petroleum, and a solution of sugar in water are all impure substances. |
