Open in App
Solution

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is formed when chlorine gas is dissolved in water. This hypochlorous acid releases nascent oxygen [O], and gets converted into hydrochloric acid. Nascent oxygen is a powerful oxidising agent and this is responsible for bleaching property of chlorine.
