Question

Dissolving salt in water is a physical or a chemical change?

Open in App
Solution

It is a physical change. When NaCl dissolves, Na and Cl ions break apart. It is not a chemical change because no new chemical bonds are formed. It can also be considered a change of state.
NaCl(s) -> NaCl(aq)
When we heat the container containing the solution of water and salt, the salt will be left behind in the container and the water will be evaporated.
