Except for one face of a given cube, identical cubes are glued to all the other faces of the given cube. If each side of the given cube measures 3 cm, what is the total surface area of the solid body thus formed?
Total surface area of one cube = 6 a2
Except one side all other sides is glued with another cube of same size, hence the surface area of original cube = 6 a2 - 5a2
Now, after glued one side is in attached with original cube and so, surface area of remaining 5 sides are = 5×5 (a) 2
So, total surface area of resultant figure =6 a2 - 5a2 + 5×5 (a) 2 = 26 a2 = 26 × 9 = 234 cm2.
