Question

Explain: Alkylation of aniline.

Open in App
Solution

Aniline does not undergo alkylation reaction (Friedel craft's alkylation reaction). This is because of the reagent AlCl3 being electron deficient attacks the lone pair of electrons of nitrogen in aniline to form an insoluble complex. The reaction does not proceed further and aniline does not get alkylated.
