Question

Explain any three types of erosional landforms created by rivers.

Open in App
Solution

Instructions:
  • Introduction
  • Explain three erosional landforms of river
Solution:
A river is a running water flowing naturally due to the level difference and gravity.
In the upper course, the river flows at a great speed and erodes the riverbed and banks to create landforms. The significant landforms from river erosion by streams include V-shaped valleys, waterfalls, gorges, canyons, etc which are explained below:
  • V-shaped valley: A V-shaped valley is formed by the vertical erosion of the river where the valley is deepened and widened.
  • Waterfall: When a river flows in a region where hard rocks lie over soft rocks horizontally, the soft rocks get eroded quickly, and the hard rocks project outwards. Thus, the river falls vertically from a steep slope to form a waterfall.
  • Gorges and canyons: When the river flows through a mountainous region made up of hard rocks, it forms a valley with almost vertical sides called a gorge. A deep gorge with steep sides that runs for hundreds of kilometres is referred to as a canyon.
