Question

Explain fractional atomic mass. What is the fractional mass of chlorine ?

Open in App
Solution

The atomic masses of most elements are fractional because they exist as a mixture of isotopes of different masses.

The Chlorine molecule occurs in two forms mainly, one as chlorine 35 and other as chlorine 37 (isotopes).

The percentage abundance of Chlorine-35 and Chlorine-37 are around 75% and 25% respectively, therefore on calculation it comes out that the average/ fractional molar mass of chlorine is 35.5 amu (approx.)
