Question

explain the acidic character of hydrides of group 17 elements

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

As we move down the group, the size of the atom increases and hence the bond length of H-X increases.
Thus, the strength of bond decreases down the group. The weaker is the bond, more easily it breaks and easily donates protons.
The more easily the proton is donated, the better is the acidity.
Thus, acidity of hydrides of halide increases down the group.
HF<HCl<HBr<HI
