Solution
Carbohydrate and the plasma membrane
The branched or unbranched chains of oligosaccharides can be associated with lipids or proteins by the process of glycosylation. The categories are stated below:-
* Glycolipids: When carbohydrates are associated with lipids, the complex is called glycolipid.
* Glycoproteins: When carbohydrates are associated with proteins, the complex is called glycoprotein.
Function of carbohydrates
Carbohydrates play an important role in serving as cell surface markers, helping in intercellular communication and cell recognition. Most of them are receptors for hormones or neurotransmitters. Hence, they help drive a cascade of reactions inside the cell.
