Explain the merger of Kashmir with the Indian Union.

  • Pakistan's attack on Kashmir.
  • Raja Harisingh agreed to merge with India.
  • Rest of Kashmir was protected by Indian military.
Solution: ​
  • Raja Harisingh of Jammu and Kashmir decided to remain independent. But soon Pakistan instigated the tribal Muslims to invade Kashmir. As a result, they were able to occupy certain area of Kashmir.
  • Realising the severity of the problem in hand, King Harisingh agreed to join India in October 1947.
  • Immediately, the Indian Army attacked the tribal soldiers and drove them out of the valley.
  • India registered a complaint against Pakistan at the United Nations. The UNO called for battle truce on January 01, 1949.
  • Even till today, Kashmir issue has not been resolved and still remains a contentious issue between India and Pakistan.
  • The North East part of Kashmir that was occupied by Pakistan is called ‘Pakistan Occupied Kashmir’.
