Question

Explain why:
Acetaldehyde undergoes aldol condensation, but formaldehyde does not.

Open in App
Solution

Aldehydes having at least one αH undergo Aldol condensation in the presence of a base to give αhydroxyaldehydes (aldol).
Since acetaldehyde CH3CHO has αH whereas formaldehyde HCHO has no αH, therefore former can undergo aldol condensation while later does no.
