Question

Explain why does colour of KMnO4 disappear when oxalic acid is added to its solution in acidic medium.

Open in App
Solution

Potassium permanganate KMnO4is an oxidizing agent which exists as a purple colour solution.

In acidic medium, when KMnO4 is added to oxalic acid, it oxidizes oxalic acid to CO2 and itself gets reduced to Mn2+

The colour of KMnO4 disappears due to the formation of Mn2+ ions which are colourless. The reaction is as follows:

2MnO4+5C2O42+16H+2Mn2++8H2O+10CO2

MnO4: coloured

Mn2+: colourless
