Question

Explain why solids have fixed shape but liquids and gases do not have fixed shape

Open in App
Solution

Solids are those substances that have strong intermolecular forces of attraction. Due to the strong intermolecular force of attraction, the constituent particles are located close to each other and did not move easily. Therefore, the solids have fix shape.

But in the case of liquids and gases, intermolecular forces of attraction are very weak as compared to solids. So, the constituent particles of gas and liquid are located far enough and can move easily. Therefore, the gases and liquids do not have fix shape.
