Question

Fill in the blanks by selecting the correct word from the brackets :
(i) If an element has a low ionization energy then it is likely to be _________ (metallic / non metallic).
(ii) If an element has seven electrons in its outermost shell then it is likely to have the _______ (largest / smallest) atomic size among all the elements in the same period.

Solution

(i) The amount of energy required to remove a loosely bound electron from its outermost shell is known as ionization energy. Ionization energy increases as we go from left to right in a period as the atomic radii decreases. Hence, metals lose electron easily an have low ionization energy.
(ii)As we go from left to right in a period as the atomic radii decreases as the electrons are added to the same valence shell. The nuclear attraction decreases and hence the element shrinks. Hence, element with 7 electrons in its valence shell will have smallest atomic size.
