defined by f(x)={x+1ifx1x2+1ifx<1

Open in App
Solution

Case I
At x=1
f is continuous at x=1
L.H.L=R.H.L=f(1)
L.H.L=limx1f(x)
=limx1(x2+1)
=1+1=2
R.H.L=limx1+f(x)
=limx1+(x+1)
=1+1=2
f(x)=x+1
f(1)=1+1=2
Thus, L.H.L=R.H.L=f(1)
f is continuous at x=1
CaseII
Let x=c where c<1
f(x)=x2+1 as x=c and c<1
f is continuous at x=c iff limxcf(x)=f(c)
L.H.S=limxcf(x)
=limxc(x2+1)
=c2+1
R.H.S=limxcf(x)
=limxc(x2+1)
=c2+1
Thus,limxcf(x)=f(c)
f is continuous for x=c where c<1
f is continuous for all real numbers less than 1
CaseIII
Let x=c where c>1
f(x)=x+1 as x=c,c>1
f is continuous at x=c if limxcf(x)=f(c)
L.H.S=limxcf(x)
=limxc(x+1)=c+1
R.H.S=f(x)=x+1
f(c)=c+1
Thus, limxcf(x)=f(c)
f is continuous for x=c where c<1
f is continuous for all real numbers less than 1
Hence, there is no point of discontinuity.
f is continuous at all real point.
Thus, f is continuous for all xR
