Solution: Let p(x) = $x^{3} - 5 x^{2} + a x - 2$
As -1 is one of the zeroes, then p(x) = 0
$(- 1)^{3} - 5 (- 1)^{2} + a (- 1) - 2$ = 0
-1-5-a-2 = 0
a = -8
