Question

For a given aqueous solution at 25oC which of the following is correct regarding the nature of solution:
  1. Acidic if [H+]<Kw
  2. Alkaline if [H+]<Kw
  3. Acidic if [H+]>Kw
  4. Neutral if [H+]=Kw

Solution

The correct options are
B Alkaline if [H+]<Kw
C Acidic if [H+]>Kw
D Neutral if [H+]=Kw
[H+][OH]=Kw
[H+]=[OH] in neutral solution.
So, solution will be neutral if
[H+]=Kw
In alkaline solution ,
[H+]<[OH]
So, [H+]<Kw
In acidic solution ,
[H+]>[OH]
So, [H+]>Kw
