Question

Give a reason for the following.
Conductivity of dilute hydrochloric acid is greater than that of acetic acid.

Open in App
Solution

Hydrochloric acid is a strong acid/electrolyte and completely dissociates into corresponding ions as H+ and Cl, while acetic acid CH3COOH is a weak acid and has partial dissociation into CH3COO and H+ . Therefore the ionic species are more in HCl than in acetic acid and this makes it more conductive.
