Chemical equations for the reaction of copper sulphate with an excess of NH4OH:

  • When Copper sulphate CuSO4 reacts with Ammonium hydroxide, NH4OH it first produces Ammonium sulphate (NH4)2SO4 and Copper hydroxide CuOH2precipitate.

  • Copper hydroxide of pale blue precipitate is formed that turns deep blue when excess ammonium hydroxide is added.
  • In the next step, ammonium sulphate, copper hydroxide further reacts with excess ammonium hydroxide to give a complex compound.
