Solution

  • Air is a mixture of gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and some other gases.
  • By volume, air contains 78% nitrogen (N2), 21% oxygen (O2), 0.93% argon (Ar),0.03% carbon dioxide(CO2), and trace amounts of other gases.
  • Hence, the gas which makes up about one-fifth of air is oxygen.
  • Oxygen ,making 21% is one-fifth of 100%. i.e., 100%5 which is approximately equal to 21%.

So, the gas which makes up about one-fifth of air is oxygen.
