When $1, 2 - d i b r o m o e t h a n e$ is boiled with alcoholic potassium hydroxide it gives the elimination product ethyne with potassium bromide and water

$C_{2} H_{4} B r_{2} + 2 K O H \to C H \equiv C H + 2 K B r + 2 H_{2} O$
