Question

Give the steps involved in the extraction of metals of low and medium reactivity from their respective sulphide ores.

Open in App
Solution

Sulphide ore of low reactivity:
Metal sulphide like HgS(s) reacts with O2(g) to form mercuric oxide and sulphur dioxide. The reactions involved is:
2HgS4(s)+3O2(g)2HgO(s)+2SO2(g)

Mercuric oxide can be heated to form Hg(s) which can be refined by distillation.
HgS(s)+2HgO(s)3Hg(s)+SO2(g)

Sulphide ore of medium reactivity:
Sulphide ore lead like PbO, on roasting gives metal oxide. The reactions involved is:
2PbS(s)+3O2(g)2PbO(s)+2SO2(g)

On reduction with coke in a close furnace gives metal and carbon monoxide. It is further purified by liquation.
PbO(s)+C(s)Pb(s)+CO(g)
