Ion:

(1)Ion may be defined as an atom or group of atoms which carries positive or negative ions.

(2)Ions carrying positive charge are called cations while those carrying negative charge are called anions.

The two examples of anions are ${\mathrm{Br}}^{-}$(bromide ion) and ${\mathrm{Cl}}^{-}$(chloride ion).
