In fungi reproduction is of three types - vegetative, asexual and sexual. There are gradual and progressive simplification and ultimate elimination of the sexual apparatus from the lower phycomycetes to higher forms of fungi.

Sexual reproduction in fungi involves three steps - plasmogamy, karyogamy and meiosis. Plasmogamy is the fusion of the cells of the fungi. This leads to a dikaryotic phase where we see two nuclei. Following this is karyogamy, or the fusion of the nuclei to form a diploid zygote. This is followed by meiosis where the diploid zygote gives rise to haploid spores. So, both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation.
