Question

Given below are two statements.

Assertion : When the capacitive reactance is smaller than the inductive reactance, in a series AC RLC circuit, voltage leads the current.

Reason : In series AC RLC circuit, inductive reactance is always greater than capacitive reactance.

Based on the above statements, choose the correct alternative.

Solution

The correct option is C Assertion is true, but the reason is false.
A series AC RLC circuit is shown below.

When the capacitive reactance is smaller than the inductive reactance, in a series AC RLC circuit, voltage leads the current because the affect of inductance is more than the affect of capacitance.

In a pure inductive AC circuit, voltage leads the current.

Also, capacitive reactance can be greater than the inductive reactance.

Therefore, the assertion is true, but the reason is false.

Hence, option (C) is the correct answer.
