Solution

The correct option is A A is false but R is true
Answer: (a)

Temporary hardness of water is due to the presence of bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium.
Temporary hardness is removed by boiling the water.

During heating, magnesium bicarbonate is converted to magnesium hydroxide.

Mg(HCO3)2Mg(OH)2+CO2

Calcium bicarbonate is converted to calcium carbonate.

Ca(HCO3)2CaCO3+CO2+H2O

Ksp Mg(OH)2<Ksp MgCO3

Hence, Mg(OH)2 precipitates first.
