Green-house gases like water vapour and carbon dioxide are absorbers of long wave infrared radiations from earth. This heats the lower atmosphere. The warmed atmosphere emits longwave radiation, some of which radiates toward the Earth’s surface, keeping it warm and generally comfortable. The increased concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane increase the temperature of the lower atmosphere by restricting the outward passage of emitted radiation which leads to global warming.
