One trading company got ahead of another trading company in the colonial race by either
(i) defeating the other trading company in war, or
(ii) through treaties that demarcated the regions where they could exclusively trade.

The result was a cut throat competition among the trading companies. More and more annexation of territories began and colonisation started at a rapid pace. There was a battle for monopoly of trade.
