Question

How do individuals of two isolated subpopulations become two different species?

Open in App
Solution

Speciation: Speciation is the process through which new species arise from the existing species.

The ways through which two isolated subpopulations become different species:

  • Geographical isolation prevents the gene flow among the group of population separated by a geographical barrier such as a mountain or a river.
  • The interbreeding between the members of the population gets affected leading to the evolution of new species on both the sides of geographical barrier.
  • Reproductive isolation is the term used for such species that were able to interbreed once, however, they cannot interbreed after speciation.
  • For example- Two groups of the population were able to interbreed, however, after the introduction of a physical barrier, the two populations were geographically isolated. After a few generations, they develop changes in their genes and anatomy that prevent them from interbreeding.
