Magnets have a tendency to attract iron, not sand.
Put the mixture of sand and iron fillings into a china dish, now move the magnet here and there in the mixture.
Iron filings are attracted by a magnet so they are removed by the method of magnetic separation.
We are then left with sand in the china dish.
