Question

How do we separate these mixtures?

kerosene and water

Open in App
Solution

Mixture - Kerosene and water
Method of separation - Separating funnel
In order to separate two immiscible liquids, a separating funnel is used based on their densities. Immiscible liquids are those liquids that do not mix with each other and form separate layers.
Procedure -

  1. The separating funnel is filled with the immiscible liquid-liquid mixture (kerosene oil and water) and close the tap.
  2. In an iron stand, the separating funnel is clamped in a vertical position.
  3. Allow the mixture to sit for at least half an hour.
  4. The mixture's immiscible components are split into two different layers. The lowest layer is made up of thicker, denser liquid water.
  5. The upper layer is made up of kerosene, which is a lighter and less thick liquid. A conical flask is put beneath the separating funnel's nozzle.
  6. The tap is gradually opened, allowing the heavier liquid to drip into the flask one drop at a time and then it is closed
  7. Under the nozzle of the separating funnel, another conical flask is put.
  8. The lighter liquid is drained by opening the tap (kerosene oil).
