Question

How do you evaluate the following expression using decimals?:
$$ 4.56 - \dfrac {4}{5} + 3.21 + \dfrac {17}{32} $$

Solution

The best way is to convert each fraction to decimal form. Two of them are already in decimal form. $$ \dfrac {4}{5} = \dfrac {4 \times 2}{5 \times 2} = \dfrac {8}{10} = 0.8 $$ and $$ \dfrac {17}{32}  = \dfrac {17 \times 3125}{32 \times 3125} = \dfrac {50125}{100000} = 0.50125 $$
$$\therefore 4.56 - 0.8 + 3.21 + 0.50125 = 7.47125 $$
