Question

How do you measure static and sliding friction using spring balance? Explain in detail.

Open in App
Solution

Place a wooden block on a table and connect it to a spring balance. Ensure that the spring balance is parallel to the table.
Pull the spring balance slowly as shown, until the block begins to slide.
The load on the spring balance just before the block begins to slide, will be the measure of the static friction.
Also, the reading on the spring balance when the block continues to slide, will be the measure of the sliding friction.
