Question

How does Amoeba obtain its food?

Open in App
Solution

Amoeba:

  1. It is a unicellular microbe that is found in every major lineage of eukaryotic organisms.
  2. It is either free-living in damp environments or is a parasite.
  3. It obtains its food by the process of phagocytosis.

Phagocytosis:

  1. It is a kind of process that occurs in Amoeba by which some living cells called phagocytes engulf other cells or particles.
  2. When phagocytosis occurs in Amoeba, its cell membrane is projected into numerous finger-like outgrowths which are known as pseudopodia.
  3. Then Amoeba surrounds a food particle by its pseudopodia and forms a food vacuole.
  4. Inside this food vacuole, complex substances are converted into simpler ones that then diffuse into the cytoplasm.
  5. The remaining undigested materials are moved to the surface of the cell and thrown out.
  6. In this way, Amoeba obtains its food.
