How does the policy of reservation work in India?

Solution

Classification of SCs, STs, and OBCs
  • The central government and state governments have their own list of Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and backward and most backward classes.
  • Students applying to educational institutions or those applying for government jobs have to furnish proof of their caste or tribe status.
  • If a particular caste or tribe is on the government’s list, then candidates from those castes or tribes can avail the benefits of reservation.
Cut-offs
  • For admission to colleges or job posts, governments define a set of cut-off marks.
  • This means that not all candidates with a valid caste or tribe certificate can qualify for admission or jobs.
  • Only those candidates, who perform reasonably well and score above the cut-off point secure admission or jobs.
