Mendel used Pisum sativum because of the following characters

1. it has shorter lifespan & is bisexual
2. has my pairs of contrasting characters
3. had easily distinguishable characters such as tall & dwarf, round & wrinkled, green & yellow, etc.
4. characters showed the dominant-recessive relationship.
