Question

How is the rate of chemical reaction affected when the surface area of the reactant is increased? Give an example in support of your answer.

Solution

Powdered calcium carbonate reacts more quickly with hydrochloric acid than marble chips. Powdered calcium carbonate offers larger surface area for the reaction to occur. This shows that greater the surface area, greater will be the rate of the reaction.
