How many electrons are present in the valence shell of nitrogen and argon?

Open in App
Solution

Valance shell and valence electrons:

  1. The outermost electron shell of an atom is called valence shell or valence orbit.
  2. The electrons present in the outermost shell of an atom are called valence electrons.

Valance electrons in Nitrogen (N):

  1. Atomic number of Nitrogen is 7. Thus, the number of electrons in Nitrogen are 7.
  2. Electronic configuration of Nitrogen is (2,5).
  3. The outermost i.e. valence shell of Nitrogen has 5 electrons.

Valance electrons in Argon (Ar):

  1. Atomic number of Argon is 18. Thus, the number of electrons in Argon are 18.
  2. Electronic configuration of Argon is (2,8,8).
  3. The outermost i.e. valence shell of Argon has 8 electrons.
