Solution

  1. A mathematical function that describes the wave-like character of an electron is called an orbital.
  2. The pathway followed by the electrons which revolve around the nucleus of an atom is known as a shell.
  3. The shell which is present close to the nucleus is called 'K' shell and the second shell is found to be a little bit far away from the nucleus is called 'L' shell.
  4. The third shell is called 'M' and the fourth shell is 'N'.
  5. The number of orbitals for 'K'is only 1 and it is 's', there are 2 orbitals for 'L'shell and they are 's'and 'p'.
  6. There are 3 orbitals for 'M' shell and they are s,p and d whereas for the 'N' shell there are 4 orbitals and they are s,p,d and f.
