When rock deforms in such a way that it bends instead of breaking, this process is known as a fold. Fold comes on the pressure on the rock that occurs over a very long period of time. The folds are created when they experience compression stress. It is when the rock is being pushed inward from both sides. There are three major types of rock folds, monoclines, synclines, and anticlines.

• A monocline is a simple bend in the rock layers so that they are no longer horizontal.

• Anticlines are folded rocks that arch upward and dip away from the center of the fold.

• A syncline is a fold that bends downward, causing the youngest rocks are to be at the center and the oldest are on the outside.
