40 kg ms1


Mass of the dumbbell, m= 10 kg
Distance covered by the dumbbell, s=80cm=0.8m
Acceleration in the downward direction,a= 10 ms2
Initial velocity of the dumbbell, u= 0
Final velocity of the dumbbell(when it was about to hit the floor) = v
According to the third equation of motion
v2u2=2asv=u2+(2×a×s)
v=0+(2×10×0.8) = 4 ms1
Hence, the momentum(p) with which the dumbbell hits the floor is
p=m×v=10×4=40 kg ms1
Therefore, dumbbell will exert a momentum of 40 kg ms1​ to the floor
