(I) Methane into ethane
(II) Methyl bromide into ethyl bromide
(III) Acetylene into nitroethane

Open in App
Solution

(1) Methane to ethane
Methane on chlorination gives chloromethane followed by Wurtz synthesis gives ethane.
CH4+Cl2CH3Cl+HCl
2CH3Cl+2NaC2H6+2NaCl

(2) Methyl bromide to ethyl bromide
Methyl bromide is converted to ethane by Wurtz reaction. Ethane on bromination gives ethyl bromide.
2CH3Br+2Naether−−CH3CH3+2NaBr
CH3CH3+Br2CH3CH2Br+HBr

(3) Acetylene into nitro ethane
HCCHH2CH2=CH2HBr−−CH3CH2BrNaNO2−−−CH3CH2NO2
