Hydrogen is prepared by electrolysis of water using platinum electrode. Here sulphuric acid is used as an electrolyte to increase the efficiency of electrolysis process.
When an electric current is passed through water it decomposes into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen gas is released at the cathode and oxygen gas is released at the anode. Amount of hydrogen generated is twice to that of oxygen.

$2 H_{2} O (l) \to 2 H_{2} (g) + O_{2} (g)$
