Alluri Seetha Rama Raju rose to prominence for organising a protest movement. The Madras Forest Act was passed in 1882 and this restricted the tribals from enganing in tradtional podu cultivation. Podu is the same as shifting cultivation or slash and burn cultivation. Inspired by the actions of the British revolutionaries, Alluri Rama Raju organised a protest movement surrounding the borders of East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts of Andhra Pradesh. He destroyed police stations, stole guns, ammunition, and killed several British officers.
