Question

I am now three years younger than twice what my age was 6 years ago. What is my age now?

Solution

We will let $$a$$ be your age now.

Your age $$6$$ years ago would then be expressed as $$a-6$$ years

Twice your age six years ago can be expressed as $$2\left( a-6 \right)$$ or $$2a-12$$

Therefore, the equation can be written as,
$$a=\left( 2a-12 \right) -3$$

$$\therefore a=2a-15$$

$$\therefore a+15=2a-15+15$$

$$\therefore a+15=2a$$

$$\therefore a+15-a=2a-a$$

$$\therefore 15=a$$

$$\therefore a=15\ years$$
