The white blood cells are divided into 5 groups based on their functions, their nuclei and the stain they take up during in-vitro observation. Basophils, eosinophils and neutrophils have a lobed nuclei. The cytoplasm of basophil takes up a basic blue stain, that of eosinophil takes up an acidic red stain, and the cytoplasm of neutrophil remains unstained. Monocytes and lymphocytes have unlobed nuclei. Monocytes are bigger with bean-shaped nuclei. Lymphocyte has a large nucleus covering most of the cell space.
