Question

If 5x-2y=17 and 3x+y=8, then find the value of x and y

Open in App
Solution

5x-2y=17 and 3x+y=8

5x-2y=17 --- > 1eqn
3x+y=8 ------> 2eqn

2nd equation X (multiplied ) with 2
that gives 6x+2y = 16 ------ > 3rd eqn

1eqn + 3rd eqn => 5x - 2y = 17 +
6x + 2y = 16

=> 11x = 33
x = 3

to find y substitue x= 3 in eqn 1

5*(3)-2y=17

15 - 2y =17

-2y = 17-15 =2

-2y =2

y = -1
