Females have two X chromosomes (XX) while males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY). Because females are XX, all eggs have one X chromosome. On the other hand, half the sperm produced by males have X chromosome and the other half have Y chromosome. If the sperm with a Y chromosome fuses with the egg (X), then the offspring will be male (XY). Sperm with X chromosome fusing with the egg, will form a female (XX).
