$[\begin{matrix} x - y & z 2 x - y & w \end{matrix}] = [\begin{matrix} - 1 & 4 0 & 5 \end{matrix}]$

Comparing both sides, we get
$x - y = - 1 . . . (i), z = 4$

$2 x - y = 0 . . . (i i), w = 5$

Solving $(i) and (i i)$ we have $x = 1, y = 2$

$∴ x = 1, y = 2, z = 4, w = 5$

Hence, $x + y = 1 + 2 = 3$
